The Third Annual Event of Ski Mountaineering in Damavand

Getting to know Damavand

Damavand is the highest volcanic peak of Asia with an altitude of
5610 m. The mountain has a symbolic significance among Iranians. It is known as the representation of stability and resistance, and it is the place where the epic hero “Arash” stood over it and defined the borders of Iran. The mountain is located in the Mazandaran Province in the north of Iran. It is a popular destination of trekking, ski mountaineering, sky running and so on.

Damavand SkiMo Event

In May 2019, and following the new emphasis on advertising the potentials of Iran as an adventure destination, a competition was held titled Ski Mountaineering International Festival or the Damavand SkiMo festival. For this event, the Seven Summit SkiMo Club with cooperation of Atour adventure group organized this event that is part of ISMF series races recognized and supervised by ISMF and MSFI.

May 11th 2019, was the first day of the festival. It started by registration of athletes from Austria, Switzerland, Catalan and Iran and the day ended with opening ceremony.

On the second day (May 12th) , the third annual Skimo festival started by sky running race, the start point was at 2100 with the length of 8 km and participants ran the whole way up to 3000 m. where they reach to the finish point. Here is the list of the winners:


Women Category:

Men Category:

  • Christian Hoffman – Austria
  • Sattar Seyd – Iran
  • Jordi Allis Catalan

For the third day (May 13th) the Ski Mountaineering race in Sprint category was held. The competition began at 3250 meters. Here are the winners of the sprint race in both Women and Men categories:


Women Category:

  • Julia Casanovas – Catalan
  • Sophie Andrey – Switzerland
  • Marzie Baha – Iran

Men Category:

  • Pau Coll – Catalan
  • Christian Hoffman – Austria
  • Jordi Allis – Catalan

Eventually, the competition came to an end on May 14th with the vertical race. The athletes participated in a race which started at 3250m. and ended in 3950m. above the sea level. And the winners of the vertical race in both women and men category were:


Women category:

  • Sophie Andrey – Switzerland
  • Julia Casanovas – Catalan
  • Marzie Baha – Iran

Men category:

  • Christian Hoffman – Austria
  • Jordi Allis – Catalan
  • Pau Coll – Catalan

On May 15th and 16th, to complete our goal by sharing knowledge and experiences of all the athletes, a group ascent to top the summit of Damavand was leaded by the manager of the festival “Mr. Hossein Salehi” just to create a great memory for upcoming years.

After summiting Damavand, the winners received their rewards and medals from organizers of the festival. The event came to an end with a final touch and a visit to the cultural sites of Tehran.
