  • What is Zard Kuh, Where is Zard Kuh?

As mentioned in the introductory part of this section (which you can find here), mountains surround Iran from sides creating the arid middle section. One of these mountains that interestingly borders the arid area as well is Zardkuh. Geographically, it is in the southwest of the country in the province of Chahar Mahal and Bakhtiary. The region is famous for beautiful nature and the presence of the local migratory tribe of Bakhtiary.

From one hand, Zardkuh is the mountain of life. Mainly, because water is the source of life and the rivers watering the southern region stem from Zardkuh. Naturally, in an arid country like Iran, water is very important. From the other hand, it is the mountain of color. Because Zardkuh is the combination of two words of “Zard” meaning yellow and “Kuh” meaning mountain. Together, they come to mean “Yellow Mountain” and refer to the yellow stones of the area.

  • How to Ascend?

With eleven +4000 mountains Zardkuh becomes a valuable mountain from a climbing perspective. However, we cannot ignore the fascinating nature of cities like Koohrang and Chelgerd. The mountaineers who visit this mountain have many routes to choose. In reality, one of the main features of this mountain is its versatility. It can suite both armature and professional climber. The best season of trekking in this mountain, like all other mountains of Iran, is summer. However, unlike Damavand and Sabalan, ski season begins early here. Of course, the weather cannot be predicted. However, usually the participants can ski here from February.

Shah Mansouri Peak (3500m)

One of the highlights of Zardkuh is Shah Mansouri peak. To get there, one must get to Shahr-e Kurd and then head to Chelgerd. There, you have a choice to stay in local houses you find in the city or trek to find a suitable place to camp. Shah Mansouri is one of the closest peaks to Chelgerd. It only takes a 30 minuets drive to the beginning of the trekking point. The trekking begins from the approximate altitude of 2300m and then continue to aroung 3500m.

Dozardeh (4000m)
Dozardeh

Your next adventure destination in Zardkuh region can be Dozardeh. The passage to Dozardeh is through Kouhrang Damp. To get there, a 40-min drive awaits the mountaineers. Then, the trekking starts. Just like Shah Mansouri peak, it starts from the approximate altitude of 2300m and continues to around 4000 meters. There is the Chal Mishan shelter at 3900 that mountaineers can use. However, you have to keep in mind that the shelter has no in advanced booking. Therefore, you might face an already filled shelter. Be ready to camp for the night.

Haftanan (4180m)
Haftanan

Another important peak here is Haftanan. You can find the peak in northwest of Zardkuh region. Adventurer who come for skiing are more interested in this mountain. In the winter, this peak has great potential for both skiing and winter ascend. The way of reaching this mountain is through Sheikh Ali Khan Cascades. Again the approximate altitude at the beginning is 2300 meters. However, Haftanan is higher than Shah Mansouri and Dozardeh. The approximate altitude of this mountain is 4180 meters. Bear in mind that the trekking period of this mountain is longer than the other two mentioned mountains. Naturally because it is higher than the other two mentioned mountains.

  • How to Get there?

The closest city to Zardkuh is the city of Shahr-e Kurd. Now, to get to there, adventurers have two ways, or better said options. First, one can take an international flight to Isfahan and then a 3-hour drive to Shahr-e Kurd. Second, adventurers can fly to Tehran and take a domestic flight to Isfahan. Again, we have the 3-hour drive to Shahr-e kurd and we are at our destination.  From there, depending on schedule and physical fitness, one can have plenty of choices to start your venture in Zardkuh region.

  • What to See?

Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province is the host of one of the main still migratory tribes of Iran. The great Bakhtiari tribe live in the pasture and plains of this land. The presence of this tribe is reason enough to attract travelers from around the world to this place. The historic sites of the region are an added bonus.  Archaeological sites and rural location, Zaman khan bridge, Karavanserai-ye Shalil, Chaleshtor Castle and amazing Lion Tombstones in nomad’s cemeteries are among the historical highlights of this province.

Yet, for those who are looking for activities other than trekking they can also enjoy Skiing in Fall and winter. Although those who want to climb this beautiful mountain range in winter must keep themselves well equipped and physically prepared.
