What is Sabalan, where is Sabalan?
Sabalan is the third highest mountain of Iran with 4811m. altitude. It is part of Alborz mountain range that covers the southern part of Caspian Sea and in terms of provincial divisions it is located in Meshginshahr, Ardabil province.
Sabalan has special spot among Iranians and according to myths it was the place where Zoroaster came to his religion. It is also known as Savalan which in Azari language means “the place where the water flows”. Sabalan is mostly known for its iconic symbols like eagle rock and crater lake on its top.
Moreover, for those who are interested in other activities besides hiking, there is potential for Skiing. Alvars ski resort is not only the biggest ski resort in Iran but also has beautiful scenery. In fact, you can enjoy skiing there in Fall and Winter where the snow is absolutely perfect for this sport. The best time for both visiting and climbing mount Sabalan or other peaks in the region is summer between first of June to first of September.
How to Ascend?
There are two routes that are most commonly used by mountaineers to summit Sabalan, northeast and western face. Among the two, the north east face is easier and mostly used by mountaineers especially in high season.
